For our first competition of the year the team traveled off to England to visit Formula Student UK - a competition where over 100 electric and combustion car teams compete alongside each other for the coveted FSUK championship. With the truck fully packed and team members' cars filled to the brim, we started our journey towards Silverstone.
The first few days were spent setting up the camp and the pit site, participating in the static events (design, costs, and the business presentation), and conducting the technical inspection of the car. During the competition we all stay on the campsite in our own tents. We also bring along a main tent where we have breakfast and meetings. Throughout the event every team has their own pit, and it is in this area that we set up all tools required for maintenance of the DUT16.
The last two days were largely reserved for the dynamic events: acceleration, skid pad, sprint, and the endurance/efficiency. The car did very well and placed 3rd on acceleration, 8th on the skid pad, and even first on the sprint! Due to the good results we were well on our way to a good overall result in the competition.
Unfortunately we had a major backlash during the endurance. After setting a very good result our car had to undergo a final technical inspection, a common procedure. To our surprise they found our front wing too wide by a margin of 3 mm. We obviously didn’t expect any problems considering the car passed the initial technical inspection. Despite suffering such a major blow, we are still very proud of what we achieved during the competition. Next to the good results in the dynamic events, we placed 5th with our business presentation and came in 2nd at the design event. On top of that, we won the Lightest Weight & Best Value Electric Vehicle award. With the good results and experience gained at FSUK we now shift our focus to Germany where we intend to become the FSG champion!
